Hmm, I don’t know about IE7/8, but IE6 does what FireFox, Windows, Notepad, Office, Visual Studio, and all other software I’ve used do. I don’t have a lot of experience with Macs or Linux, but I don’t recall seeing this behavior in other apps (eg word processors, etc.) in those OSes either, so it is likely just a browser issue (likely WebKit).
