Comment #27 on issue 3977 by kevinkells: Chrome doesn't launch Adobe reader
when the option not to open pdf's in a browser is set
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=3977

Update to comment 26:

I've found a solution to the problem at
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=74b257fb361db811&hl=en

1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Browser
2. Copy the file "nppdf32.dll"
3. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local
Settings\Application
Data\Google\Chrome\Application
4. If the Plugins folder does not exist, create it.
5. Navigate to Plugins
6. Paste the nppdf32.dll file
7. Restart Chrome.

Now I can open PDF files in Chrome, same as before the Adobe Acrobat
Professional
8.1.4 update. This solves my problem.
