To [email protected], For PDF files to open, u should probably install acrobat reader. I got it installed on my system. But .DOC or .ppt files are never opened directly even though MS Office is installed. And about the Image file(such as jpeg/gif/bmp), like u said, it should also open directly without having to save it first. If at all anyone wants to save a file/image, he can always rightClick and then Save.
