Thanks for the comments, Tony. :) When I left-click links in Gmail with that setting, the links are diverted to the background, just as you suggest. There are a few instances where the background behavior is less desirable than in Google Reader. However, on the whole, I prefer the background behavior to foreground behavior. I suspect most users would prefer the foreground behavior, which is why I really only want a way to change it to work the way I want it to, such as a hidden setting or startup switch or what-have-you. Perhaps I should look into an extension instead.
