Due to font rendering differences (not in the metrics, but in the antialiasing/hinting) and form control differences (similarly, not in the layout, but in the rendering of e.g. shadows), we need a different set of expected images on Linux than Windows. We'd like to check in these images.
However, that will mean the chromium repo (under webkit/data/layout_tests/platform/chromium-linux) will grow by the size of this data. For comparison, the chromium-win directory is 4745 png files, another 4745 checksums, and a total 94 megabytes. Everyone will now end up checking those out, so svn will be correspondingly slower and repo size (and initial checkout time) will be worse. An alternative is to split this data out via DEPS; in that case it'd make sense to do the same to mac and win.
