Topic at the moment:

> Congratulations on Chrome 1.0! |
> See http://www.google.com/support/chrome/ for general help |
> IRC logs: http://echelog.matzon.dk/?chromium

= Suggestions =

1. Topic should first and foremost state that it's a developer room.

2. Topic should include http URLs that are relevant to the room. So,
include at least
http://dev.chromium.org/ and
http://dev.chromium.org/developers/technical-discussion-groups

3. Topic should steer non-developers to http://www.google.com/chrome

I guess that it's way too late to have
irc://irc.freenode.net/#chromium-dev in lieu of
irc://irc.freenode.net/#chromium ;)

= Background =

People like me use IRC rooms — as often, or more often than web
browsing — as starting points for numerous technologies.

>From irc://irc.freenode.net/#chromium then via Google searching I
found my way to messages within a Google Group for Google Chrome that
was not official.

Then, yet another Google Group for Google Chrome that was not
official.

Then, references to 'chromium-dev' without a suffix, and searches led
me to an established chromium-dev list.

Then, a Google Group for chromium-dev that was official to Chrome.

Then, searches led me to a less well established chromium-dev list.

>From Google search results, it was not immediately obvious which of
the two chromium-dev lists were related to Chrome.

Finally, there remained the question of whether the Google Group for
chromium-dev was an archive of messages sent to the chromium-dev list.

(OT: I tend to prefer traditional e-mail to Google Groups, because
AFAIR the Groups UI doesn't respect basics such as angle bracket-
enclosed URLs.)

I found my way here, eventually, but it was a _less_ than sterling
introduction!

(My thanks to IRC room members who helped me to unravel what was
missing from the topic.)

Hence, the value of a refined topic for the developer room in IRC :)

TIA
Graham
