I think scons was chosen simply because it's powerful
and flexible.  (I hate it, too, btw., but I respect what it can do,
and I don't hate it enough to rip it out.)

If somebody wanted to put together a CMake build for
Chromium that supported all three platforms well,
it would be fun to do a head-to-head comparison
to see how it compared in clarity and performance.
