A bug tracker is the right place to have this discussion, and I see
you've filed 19508 which was closed WontFix.  I appreciate your
opinion and dedication to Linux.  We have plenty of Linux users who
have gotten adjusted to this behavior and prefer it.  There is no
clear answer, which is why there has been so much discussion.  I am
not going to try to repeat all of that here.  You can also read bug
13561, which was a previous round of something similar.

Basically you have to stop thinking of the Omnibox as an already
existing GTK widget, and think of it as a new widget designed
specifically for optimizing input of URLs.  That means there is no
conventions for this new type of widget.  GtkEntry / etc were
optimized for clicking a text box and editing / inserting text.  The
Omnibox widget is optimized for clicking and replacing text.  We
believe this behavior makes sense for how people input URLs.
