I have this same issue.  There definitely is not the normal "pop-up
blocked" bar in the bottom-right of chrome.  I have:

-WinXP
-Chrome
-several 'Gmail Labs' features turned on: Tasks, Quick Links, Pictures
in Chat, Fixed Width font, Custom Keyboard shortcuts, Mouse gestures,
Signature tweaks, Right-Side Chat, Navbar drag-n-drop, Google Calendar
Gadget, Creat a Document, Google Docs Gadget, add any gadget by URL,
and a few others
