I've been making a lot of bookmarklets lately and working with
bookmarks and the bookmarks bar. I've been thinking on what would be
the best way to organize bookmarklets, because bookmarklets are small
little tools and you might have a lot. So I put them in a folder on my
bookmarks bar to the right most area. This way I can easily access
them. But then this folder has gotten to cluttered, and the only way I
could organize them is by adding subfolders.

This is of course the best way to currently organize my bookmark(let)
s, and I'm not saying it's bad. But what I'm saying is, that I
suddenly got an idea from this whole experience. I thought about what
it would be like to have a search bar in the bookmarks bar. I'm not
talking about a clunky, take-up-all-the-space type of search bar. I'm
talking about one that automatically expands when you type into it.
Kinda like one of my bookmarklets:

http:// bookmarklets .freehostia .com /chat/

If you were to run the bookmarklet form that page you'd find a little
blue thing appear at the bottom right of the page. If you where to
click it or press ctrl+space, you'd find that you'd be able to type in
it. But notice how it automatically expands as you type. This is how I
recommend a bookmarks search bar in the bookmarks bar would behave.
The search bar should start out as the size of a folder icon in the
bookmarks bar. Once you start typing though, it expands and moves all
the bookmarks to the right of it. Also as you type, it displays a drop
down menu of all the bookmarks related to the current search keyword
(s). You can then use the arrow keys or mouse to select a bookmark
from this menu.

I know what you could be thinking; why not just open the bookmarks
manager and use the search feature there. Well because it require more
effort to find what your looking for. With a bookmarks search feature
right on the bookmarks bar, you could find exactly what your looking
for on the fly. It would be so much more intuitive! Heck, what if you
made the "Other bookmarks" folder the search bar and when you focus/
click on the search bar it'll display the drop down list that "Other
bookmarks" would have displayed anyway.

This idea just came to mind and so I thought I'd share it. I'm all for
a search bar in the bookmarks bar. Although I recommend it being on
the right with auto-expand ability.

With a search bar I wouldn't have to navigate through numerous
subfolders to get to where I want. All I would need to do is start
typing the name of the bookmarklet I'm looking for. Of course I would
still organize my bookmarks into subfolders, but with a bookmarks
search bar I could easily access them.

Optionally in this request, a tags feature for every bookmark would
come in handy with a search bar. This way I can add a bookmarklet tag
or * tag to all my bookmarklets so that I can just start with the that
tag and it'll bring up all of my bookmarklets.

Whew. Sorry for the long post. What is your personal opinion on this
request? Do you think it would come in handy? Would you use it? Even
if you don't use it, do you think others would find it useful? Your
thoughts?

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Cheers!

Note: please don't use my bookmarklet other then for example purposes
here, 'cause the server that I have isn't a good server and can't
handle people using it.
