This takes me back to when I first started using Firefox... large
downloads were invariably corrupted, and it was unusable until the
devs fixed the FF download manager.

I use Chromium (on Xubuntu) for downloads quite a bit and have not
experienced problems with corrupted download files.

However, I would welcome improvements to the download manager (such as
the ability to resume partial downloads), and I have experienced
problems with Chromium crashing when I try to specify the location to
save download files.  I thought that it might be a problem with GNOME,
but switching to Xfce didn't help very much.
