I think these are being worked on. registerContentHandler lets
websites register themselves as the handler for certain mime types (so
google docs could register itself (with your permission of course) as
your PDF viewer) and registerProtocolHandler lets websites register
themselves as protocol handlers for, for instance, mailto: links.

(these are mozilla pages, but I know that at least the first one is
being discussed for Chrome: I saw a design doc for it some time ago on
chromium-dev)
