David Kyle writes: 'May 1917...reference biography vol iv page 44'

That reference is on pages 19-20 of the first edition of WINSTON S.
CHURCHILL IV (London: Heinemann, 1975). WSC and Clemenceau also met
Foch on 30 March 1918 (page 93 of the same volume). But this doesn't
clear up WSC's statement that he met Foch before the war.

WINSTON S. CHURCHILL II (London: Heinemann, 1967, 221, 224) mentions
that WSC attended French Army manoeuvres in Summer 1907, but there is
no mention of Foch there or in the corresponding Companion. Since the
Companions contain only a small fraction of his letters, the Churchill
Archives might be consulted circa June-July 1907 for mention of Foch.
