"New Book by Andrew Roberts" has developed into a shaggy dog thread,
so here's a new one.

We relayed Anthony Calabrese's request for Orwell's take on Churchill
to Robert Pilpel ("Churchill in America 1895-1961," New York: 1976),
who is also an Orwell scholar. Bob quotes and comments from the Orwell
essay Jim Lancaster posted in full in the Andrew Roberts thread:

"On page 110 of the final (20th) volume of Orwell's collected works
there is a characteristically insightful (terrible neologism; my
apologies) review of THEIR FINEST HOUR (no less) from the 14 May 1949
NEW LEADER (New York). Among my favorite gems -- 'Churchill's
writings are more like those of a human being than of a public
figure....However thankful one may be that he and his party did not
win the 1945 election, one has to admire in him not only his courage
but also a certain largeness and geniality which comes out even in
formal memoirs of this type.'

"Orwell had but nine months to live when he wrote this but he was fair-
minded to the end. A self-avowed man of the Left, he always showed a
shrewd appreciation of WSC's virtues. I recommend you obtain volume XX
if you don't already have it because it contains an invaluable
cumulative index for the whole 20-volume series. As a vademecum to
doings on the Left in WSC's time this cumulative index is a rare
treasure."

Would be glad to read other Orwell pronouncements on Churchill.
