Could you please elaborate a bit on the "other symptoms that we've seen with
such setup."?

I'm very interested as we have this exact situation. I'd like to know
beforehand what problems we can expect further down the road.

And do I understand correctly that in a "normal" situation a OpenSolaris
CIFS server should be listed in the My Network Places" list from the very
moment one starts offering shares? I mean: there is no extra action to be
taken in "normal" circumstances like setting parameter somewhere or starting
a extra daemon to have it appear in that list. Am I correct?
