AFAIK, there isn't any changes in the domain join procedure.

Correct! This is exactly what the CIFS admin guide has suggested. See 
the krb5.conf sample here:

With pre-snv103 build, it's okay to omit the following domain realm 
configuration:

.domain.local = DOMAIN.LOCAL

Apparently, there is a Kerberos bug (CR 6777148) that causes a change in 
the behavior.
