same box by any chance?  A: No Samba.

Do you see any errors in the log when your access fails?  A: No errors
in event logs -- i have seen ID mapping failures in Nexenta logs.

Could you post those messages? If ID mapping fails it could result in
login failure.

We'll try to see if we can reproduce the problem in our lab.

Do you see any crash dump on the system?  A: No crash dumps.

You might want to monitor smbd's PID to see whether the service restarts
for some reason when the access fails. You could do this using pgrep:

# pgrep smbd


A: I can try this and see what happens.  The strange thing is, as I
said, it happens on AD domain with 2003 functional level, but I've seen
no failures at all on my test domain running in Windows 2000 mixed mode.
