Filling swap space will cause many things to break. The first question is what filled it. Suggest you look through /var/run, /tmp, and /etc/svc/volatile looking for big files, and "ps -e -o pid, vsz, args" looking for huge processes.

more /var/svc/log/svc.startd.log
and
grep core /var/svc/log/*
may also be illuminating.

Well, the swap error I don't know about for sure, that may just be
something that's snuck in to sxce.

However this server is a clean install, isn't used for anything other
than cifs, and that error occurs after an idmap error, so I think it's
likely to be related.

i was seeing this happening maybe 20 builds ago, but i don't believe
it was related to cifs. i never really tracked down the source of the
problem, just did a clean install of a newer build and it went away.
what makes you think this is cifs-related?

once you run out of swap space, all kinds of things will start to
break, obviously.
