Hi Connor, not sure if you ever found a solution for your problem. I was experiencing something similar, CIFS would freeze until I rebooted the system. I just removed VirtualBox 3.0.10 from my system, I am waiting to see if that solves the problem.
Something tells me VirtualBox, or more accurately the virtual network adapter that it installs is somehow the problem. One time when CIFS was frozen I logged into the server at the console and noticed that the icon that tells you which network interface is active was indicating the VirtualBox adapter was selected, even though I had no VMs running - weird.
