I see your point, but setting up mediatomb on Linux is already pain, so I didn't want to do the whole exercise again. I also run an XP here (currently not because of problem mentioned), so virtualisation is available anyway. I didn't simply install Ubuntu since I like ZFS and software RAID.
Might try to install mediatomb directly on Opensolaris some time... But you are right in principle. I haven't done a lot with NFS yet, otherwise this would have been my first choice too... The server is no big iron, but sufficient for streaming.
