Thanks for all the suggestions hkazemi. I have actually tried from a couple
different PCs running Windows 7 and the result is the same. All were 'recently'
reloaded from scratch but not since the problem started. I do not have any
Vista machines available - I couldn't wait to get rid of that garbage!

Unfortunately I have lost the will to keep working on finding a solution for
this problem, partly due to the fact that I have had very little luck getting
other aspects of my OpenSolaris system working like Twonky Media Server and
NZBGet - despite some seemingly excellent tutorials - I think I'm just cursed.

I recently set up a Linux based D-Link DNS-323 NAS for a relative and I am
really impressed at the capabilities that it has, especially the daily rsync
backups that I was able to configure surprisingly easily. And it works
flawlessly as a storage location for Windows 7 Media Center machines, which I
guess answers one of your questions (the D-Link does use Samba).

My wife has been pushing me to get rid of the big noisy full tower server and
get one of these instead, and with the price of 2GB drives these days it really
makes a lot of sense - I can have as much storage as I have in my OpenSolaris
server in a box that is 1/10th the size and uses 1/3 or less power.

I'm sure there is lots of potential functionality I'll be giving up to go this
route but I'm prepared to live with the limitations it presents.
Probably the biggest sacrifice of going that route is not being able to benefit from ZFS's checksumming/data integrity/deduplication features. I've found that off-the-shelf solutions that advertise themselves as "it-just-works" are sometimes that, but only if you stay on the reservation.

The trick for improving the WAF (wife approval factor) of the tower server is to keep it out of sight and out of earshot. A reasonably ventilated closet or clean off-the-floor location in a (basement) utility room should work. Use a wireless ethernet bridge/bridging AP or install an OpenSolaris compatible wifi NIC to get access to the server. Use a hardwired cable for the really large transfers. For the wireless card, I think an Intel WiFi Link 5300 might work well as it is a 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4/5ghz card that is on the supported cards list. It uses the 'iwh' driver, starting with snv_99, and adding 802.11n support in snv_122 according to http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Project+sierra/ .

One caveat with Intel wifi cards is some of them seem to be picky about the motherboard chipset you use them with. An alternative would be to choose a recent Atheros chipset based device supported by the 'arn' driver: http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Community+Group+laptop/arn
Oxfordtec has a good selection:

Here is a pretty good list comparing WLAN 11n miniPCIe cards

To put an Intel WiFi Link 5300 in a desktop/server, you will need a mini-PCIe to PCIe adapter. A combo kit is available here, but you can buy the pieces separately if you want to use a different wifi card:

MP2W-5300
MP2W-5300M (full sized card)
MP2W-5300H (half sized card)

The power and space issues can be addressed if you are careful with your hardware selection and choose 2.5" drives. One article is here, which uses a Chenbro ES34069 NAS chassis that can hold 4 3.5" drives, and MSI IM-945GC – Intel Atom N330 1.6GHz Dual Core 64bit motherboard/CPU combo that can idle under 50 watts:

Thanks again, I will post back if I change my mind and decide to implement any
of the suggestions you made. I think I will try comparing the hash values in
the next day or two while I'm waiting for my new NAS to arrive just so I can
pinpoint the problem and possibly help the OpenSolaris CIFS development team
out if it is indeed an OpenSolaris bug (as I suspect) and not some MS-weirdness
(always a possibility!)
A few searches found me the following articles. It appears that a fair number of people are having trouble with WMP 12, in regard to MP3s, MP3 ID3 tags, and network shares/mapped drives. There is a reasonable chance that your seeing of the WMP problems was correlated with the upgrade to OpenSolaris build 130 rather than caused by the upgrade. On the other hand, there may be a timing component to the WMP12 problems that is aggravated by something different in how CIFS in build 111 and build 130 performs.
