03/28/07 14:46 RI has proper reason to support sanction on Iran Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia has the right reason to support the United Nations` sanction against Iran on nuclear issue, a legislator said. "Indonesia is still a good friend of Iran. However, in diplomacy, Indonesia must adjust its attitude to the developing situation," Yusron Ihsa Mahendra, deputy chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR)`s Commission I, said here on Wednesday. Following a controversy which continued developing in Indonesia, Yusron Ihza Mahendra of the Crescent and Start Party, said that the government needed to make an additional clarification on its stance of supporting the sanction. Up to now, over 120 members of Parliament have signed an interpellation proposal to question the government policy concerning the Indonesian representatives in the United Nations who supported the UN sanction on Iran. Effendy Choirie, a legislator of the National Awakening Party, said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono could be impeached for the policy. "The Indonesian Government`s stance could be considered impropriate and against the spirit of the Preamble of the Constitution 1945, which is against any form of colonialism," Effendy Choirie said. However, Mahendra said that although Indonesian had supported the UN sanction against Iran, the country had continued to lobby the United Nations. "The lobby is carried out to lessen the sanction," he said. Yusron Ihza Mahendra believed that Iran could understand the stance of Indonesia. Fifteen members of the UN Security Council endorsed on Saturday a resolution to impose additional sanctions on Iran after that country refused to stop its uranium enrichment program. UN Security Council Resolution 1747 which was prepared by Britain, France and Germany calls for a ban on export of weapons to Iran and freezing of the assets of 28 persons and organizations linked to the Iranian nuclear and missile program. Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said here on Monday Indonesia hoped Iran could make use of the time provided by the resolution to seek a peaceful solution to the issue.
