"Our team is still studying the possibility of the two foreign banks` participation in financing the purchase of six Sukhois, the agreement of which has been signed by the two governments," defense minister Juwono Sudarsono said here on Wednesday during an inspection of the Abdulrahmansaleh air force base in Malang, East Java. He said the planned purchase of the Russsian aircraft had been completely processed and only awaiting approval of the finance ministry on the sources of the funds. He said the plan would not be part of a Russian credit scheme worth US$1 billion. "Its budget has been put in the export credit allocation for 2004-2009. So it is not a part of the state credits from Russia," he said. He said further that the plan including defense cooperation between Indonesia and Russia would be discussed during the planned visit of Russian president Vladimir Putin here early next month. The minister admitted that the spareparts and main defense system equipment at the Abdulrahmansaleh air force base and the army`s Division 2/Kostrad here are now inadequate. "Mostly the spareparts and main defense system equipment at the Abdulrahmansaleh air force base and Divisi 2/Kostrad are already too old," he said. He said however the Indonesian defense forces (TNI) also had to use its limited budget for maintainance purposes. Especially for the Air Force where focus would still be on improving readiness of its transport planes C130 Hercules because of their high mobility for military as well as non-military operations. "It however does not mean that we ignore striking forces such as fighter planes. So we would continue with our plan to purchase Sukhois.
