KTNA Chairman Winarno Tohir said here on Monday that the figure of forecast I of the Central Board of Statistics (BPS) which said Indonesia`s rice production in 2010 increased by only 0.88 percent should serve as reminder because it was below the national target of 3.2 percent. "This is a reminder that should encourage us to work harder in raising rice production," he said.After all, he said, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had predicted that the dry season would start at the end of this month (March). If the BMKG forecast is right, it can be ascertained that Indonesia would import rice. In the meantime, the planting season would be delayed until one to two months so that it would affect the planting season in 2010. He said that at present the government should also pay attention to the rice stocks in the world market. In a number of countries, rice production would be lower than the domestic need such as in India, Pakistan and China. Even, he said, India has expressed intention to import 240,000 tons while actually these countries usually rice exporters to Indonesia. "If Indonesia is willing to import rice it would not be easy to obtain the commodity because even the exporter countries are now willing to import to meet their domestic needs," he said.(*)
