I think I've seen this when ALSA was occupied by some other application. Kill
artsd, esound, amarok, alsamixer, KMix, noatun, kaffein, mplayer, xine,
alsaplayer, etc....
("asound server" mentioned in a previous post was actually a typo, it was
meant to read "a sound server".)
Also check your .alsarc file. If you have one, move it away.
