basically it is not very difficult. Ok, you need some "unofficial"
repository, like "marrilat" or "debian unofficial" IIRC.

At the moment things seem to be a bit complicated with etch.
(I am using "64Studio" and "DeMuDi", both based on debian testing)
Currently, we can't install the simplest things as there are some
required libs (notably form kde) still not in testing. So at the
moment, you either have to fiddle with Apt-Pins and use unstable
or need to be patient.

stability has been largely improved in last time. Im using it
heavily and generally didn't entcounter any serious problems.

Of course, cinelerra has the habbit of simply crashing when you
do something obvious silly, it never bothers the poor haunted
power user with spurious mesage boxes or step-by-step-recovery
wizards :-)
But there is a reliable auto backup feature (importand: the really
first thing you need to do after restart after a crash ist "load backup"
form file menu)

With respect to frustration I can't promise you anything. As with most
any pro software, you probably get lots of frustrating experiences if
you think a "normal" application should behave as if it was microsoft
word. You should really read the manual completely and try to understand
what's written there.

Cheers,
Hermann
