update to account for first patch uniqueness (and some other simplifications)
This is another update to account for the first keyframe's uniqueness, i.e. the
first keyframe controls the settings before its position and doesn't have to be
located at the effect start.
Also this has some minor simplifications, it uses read_data() instead of
creating a new function, and changes the flag is_prev_keyframe to the more
accurately named is_current_keyframe.
