More info on that: my problem is seems to be triggered by running another video application while cinelerra is running, such as mplayer or vlc. I thought it was caused by rendering initially, but it was when I watched the rendered output in a player.
It's avoided by closing cinalerra before opening mplayer/vlc/other video playback applications. Restarting X11 unjams the bug.
