I used firewire ages ago with (choak/cough) iMovie 1.0 and it worked fine. I'm actually editing with a 7200rpm usb2 drive right now and have actually noticed an INCREASE in speed rather than a decrease (using a laptop). So, I'd think that firewire should be fine, especially if you're using a firewire 800 connection). I formatted my external drive with xfs (to avoid fat32 file-size limits) - which gave me read privileges only. No worries, I opened up konqueror as root, went to the /media directory, brought up the properties of the drives mount-point and changed the group to "video" and then gave the group read-write privs (I'm in "video" btw). No problems at all and it works GREAT.
