/dev/raw1394 (which the previous poster referred to) _is_ the firewire interface. And it _does_ belong to the "disk" group. This is somewhat inconvenient, for usability and security reasons, and the ieee1394 driver developers are aware of it. However, no solution is imminent, as far as I know.
