I'm of the impression that dv grabbing in cinelerra is broken currently
for newer architectures (new kernels with iec61883 input setups.)  I
started to look in to it, but no promises on when it will get fixed.  I
had a similar experience to yours with SUSE 10.2 and a miniDV cam.  I
can capture with dvgrab with the same machine and camera, so I know this
is a cinelerra limitation.

Before taking your camera back, try using dvgrab (commmand line capture
utility) or kino to verify your firewire hardware and camera setup.
