OK. I had the wrong source, even though i did try to choose correctly initially.

I got the correct one, and it compiled fine.  Haven't used it extensively yet, 
but the build executes.

I initially came to the CVS version but saw the words "read-only" there and 
that falsely associated in my brain with  "demo version", and that, in turn, 
with  "proprietary code."

Hence, I left that page and downloaded the alternative.

I now realize the "read-only" applies to one's (in)ability to contribute to the 
CVS tree; however, perhaps better to avoid the ambiguous connotation with 
something like "for cvs developers only" or "non-developers' version" or some 
such.
