Hi Griff
I have just read your long post to Bill and hope you can help/advise me too.
Having converted to Ubuntu only 3 months ago this is my third attempt to install Cinelerra without luck.

First, I used Synaptic a few weeks ago. It ran without giving me any error messages, place dthe Cinelerra icon into the Application menu but I was unable to launch the program. Finally I went back to Synaptic and uninstalled the lot.

A couple of days ago I downloaded the sourcecode file (cinelerra-2.1-src.tar.bz2) from HV. As instructed it configured OK but stalled on make like this:

Configured successfully. Type 'make' to build it.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/cinelerra-2.1$ make
make -f build/Makefile.cinelerra
sh: -c: line 1: syntax error: unexpected end of file
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/franz/cinelerra-2.1'
gcc -c -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -falign-loops=2 -falign-jumps=2 -falign-functions=2 -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -I../../freetype-2.1.4/include -I../../ -DHAVE_OSS -DHAVE_FIREWIRE soundtest.c -o i686/soundtest.o
Assembler messages:
FATAL: can't create i686/soundtest.o: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [i686/soundtest.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/franz/cinelerra-2.1'
make: *** [all] Error 2
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/cinelerra-2.1$
At this point I am lost in the jargon and delete the entire Cindelerra-2.1 directory.

Thirdly, earlier today I arrived at Cinelerra.org (and registered). I followed the Installation Instructions in the manual for Ubuntu Dapper Drake.

The running of apt-get install cinelerra produced:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get install cinelerra

including a Cinelerra icon in my Applications menu, which, again, resists to any launch attempt. So does clicking on the binary at /usr/bin/cinelerra.

Otherwise my Ubuntu Dapper distro works well with
Gigabyte GA-8I915P Duo (Pro)
Pentium 4 LGA775
ATI Radeon RX600 Pro-Guru
Audigy2 ZS
2Gb RAM

A DVICO Fusio DVB-T card works OK via Kaffeine
Kino reads my digital video via firewire OK

BUT, I am lost to figure out why I can't get Cinelerra to work.

After a lifetime of Windows, I am still learning the essentials of Linux, so the most basic instructions would be indeed very welcome.

Regards
Franz
