excellent!  Did it happen to show both timestamp and recording date?
The patch currently is getting the recording date from an undocumented
(at least, not in the mpeg2 spec) packet in the mpeg2 stream, so I
wonder if Canon uses the same thing or has some other way to encode
the recording date in the stream.

Well, I finally got my camera and gave the patch a try. It worked
flawless on my Canon HV20. I ran it with the --showstatus option and
all I saw was my frames coming in like clockwork. Let me know if you
