 If you want as little loss as possible in Cinelerra, and your source
material is not DV, I would suggest converting to a lossless format.
Currently, only uncompressed video seems workable (PNG is slow and
HuffYUV is still on the wishlist).
 Uncompressed video will keep your harddrive chugging at full speed,
but it is easier on the CPU.  If you have a few hundred gigabytes of
free space, uncompressed video may be the way to go.
