I think I've been having the same problem.  Under Cinelerra, video falls
behind audio if the Compositor window's size is set to larger than 50%.
At 50% the video seems to keep up.
 

There may be a confusing typo in the manual, which reads:

        Play every frame
        
        This causes every frame of video to be displayed even if it
        means that the playback of the audio tracks(s) will fall behind.
        This option should always be enabled unless you use uncompressed
        codecs.
        
This should probably read "... playback of the video track ..."


Cillian de Roiste's advice about "Play every frame" appears to be
exactly the opposite of the advice in the manual, at least to the
ignorant like myself.
