It's still needed only for MPEG 1 audio files (variable bit rate streams).

Wrong. The answer people get is "Yes! You can!" 

I heard people saying that Raw DV is the best format for source files in
Cin. My experience confirms it.
Using Quicktime/DV I was persecuted by this bug:
