I posted this to amaturevideoeditig this morning. Just thought some
here might also be interested. Someone recently said theu didn't
think Cinelerra needed to use the selling tactics of the propriatry
softwares and that may be true. What I have done here is worn of mouth
advertising and any and all of us who believe in Cin 3 can do this
promotion. The more users and believers the better it is to get funds
and support for the new improvements and rewriting. We should all do
this whenever possible I think Every convert that is made will likely
give something back to Cin 3. I feel to make a convincing friend to
friend word of mouth argument for anything. Youre argument has to be
credable and that means showing of some of it's warts as well as its
vast array of positive attrabutes. I think that some of us who cannot
write code should set up and ORGANIZED program to sell Cine 3 in what
ever name is chosen. In the imortal words of Bill it dos'nt matter if
the code is any good it's marketing that counts. This may not be so,
but a little marketing can't hurt either.. Below is a reply to
Thought I'd squeeze in and make a comment or two here ( or more). I
have a dual boot computer running Xp and Ubuntu. In xp I am using a
copy of Premier which I like but it is too expensive for my kind of
fumbling with video. I have used Kino and it is great at twice the
price. I have also messed with Lives, a free editing program and it
works but I hadn't used it enough to be anything like good with it. My
real favorite program is Cinelerra it's free and very capable of being
able to handle very complex video. There is a group working on improving
it which it needs badly. It's a quirky program and the learning curve
is steep but it has the ability to do most anything Premiere can do.
One of the good things is that all the updates and improvements will be
free and will be on going, so the program is as bad as it will ever be
and it's free and steady improving..
I like the program a lot, it has an artistic feel as it uses rubber
bands ,for lack of a better description, in the same way Proxmire's does
to make video more or less opaique. Cinelerra uses bands to zoom, pan
and impose one clip over another and then do the same with sound and
music. In less than a year I expect it will use bands for mixing color.
Video editing in it, is much like composing and orchestra or writing
music you can look at the time line bands and read them like a music
scores. You have a feel for how your video will look, sound and the
combined rythem of both as you go through and tweek them even before you
watch them..
With big hard drives as cheap as they are you can install Ubuntu
studio right along side XP. Ubuntu studio which is loaded with free
video, audio and art programs of all kinds is a free download. I find I
am doing more and more with free programs and am using xp less and
less. If you use both systems you will find yourself moving away from
windows programs purely for comvience and budget reasons.
I just finished a 35 minute video in Premier because I know how to
use it but I am slowly moving to Cinelerra and the surrounding raft of
free and really good audio and visual programs that are available.
Most are very professionals in nature and more and more being used in
the movie industry.
Be warned though going this Linux route is pretty frustrating to
start with but after a time learning the rewards are great.
If I sound like an advocate I guess it's because I am.
