Since this my first post here:
I'm an industrial designer with a huge interest in interaction and
interface design. I have next to no experience with video, but have been
working with audio and Flash.

You might get an idea of what I could do for this project if you take a look

With MPX it will become possible to use more than one mouse.
If it can take on a special "role", you would have an extra set of buttons

Each device has at least one axis (you could also call it a channel).
If you think of buttons as axes, too, you now have boolean and
continuous axes of varying resolution. Some axes are releated like 
x and y of a tablet pen. You might want to have "groups" to model 
that relation.

Since mapping input device events to actions is interesting for several 
apllications, I think it should be a system-wide service.

Well, some time ago I started conceptual work, but didn't finish it  
because there wasn't enough interest in my admitedly far reaching  
ideas and there are very challenging design issues.
