Hi,

We already briefly touched the Topic of Hardware Interfaces for Video
Editing in our Discussions about cin3, but I feel that there are still
enough open issues left.

There various "Non-Standard" Input devices, so I'll start with a
little list of them to get an Overview.

* "Jog-Weels": Useful to control parameters like Volume, or
alternatively to scrub through the timeline, Devices available are the
"Griffin Powermate", and the "Contour Shuttle Pro", and probably some
more, which are less known, mice have wheels to btw.

* "Midi-Controllers": They come in a very wide range of variants,
Ranging from Mixers with various sliders and knobs, over to
mixer-consoles with motorized faders, to multipurpose devices like the
"Hercules DJ Console", that integrates USB-Audio-IO with various
different Control Interfaces.

* "Joysticks": While Joysticks and Gamepads likely seen as Toys, the
do actually provide quite nice properties, such as several Analog
Inputs, as well as an ergonomic design. Just think about controlling
Camera and Projector Automation simultaneously with a Dual-Thumb-Stick
Gamepad.

There are of course likely other alternative Input methods, but I
think that those listed above are the most interesting ones for the
purpose of Video Editing.

I think that it would be quite useful to think about some kind of
unified Configuration Tool or Interface, to map all kinds of Input
Devices to actions in a Video Editor.

I'd like to know what kind of events you would like to map to devices,
and what devices you would think would be worth supporting.

If you have any Ideas about how an application could look like that
would allow the most flexible configuration and mapping of such
devices, please, share your ideas. :-)

Cheers
-Richard
