There is an app called Ubuntu Studio Controls available in the
repos.(sudo aptitude install ubuntustudio-controls) Among other things,
it lets you change the permissions on /dev/raw1394 through udev rules.
It is a security risk if someone can get direct physical access to the
machine (DMA over firewire), but that is a small concern for most people.
