yes, exactly. It just dumps out internal structures :-)

Btw, if I recall correct, there is a menu entry "close source" in the
context menu of the viewer, which has about the same effect, i.e. it
removes the internal data structures of an clip opened for viewing,
when you select it prior to saving.

But I should add that it's not completely "junk". For example, you can
set lables in the viewer, create an in/out point etc. To my experience,
the lables are persisted in the clip definition *only* if you once save
the session while still having opened the clip in the viewer. For me,
this is a pretty much important feature when working with large amounts
of footage: being able to pre-select interesting locations permanently.

Moreover, you can also save a selection from the timeline (in/out plus
arming the correct tracks) as a new clip, even with something different
than the standard number of tracks. Then you could open this new clip in
the viewer, set in/out and thus re-add parts to the timeline. This is
the reason why the viewer window as well as any clip in the resources
contains a complete embedded EDL.
