On your lock up problem, check Settings>Preferances > Playback and select
Audio Driver = Alsa
Underneath that check the tab "Stop playback locks up"
Under Video Out uncheck "Play Every Frame"

I'm using the build from http://debian-multimedia.org and that resolved the
same error you were having it's a bit older (2007) but works fine. I have a
script to install the whole deb multimedia repo if interested.
