Thanks for the suggestion.  This is new news to me!

I'm no hdwr expert (if so, I wouldn't be asking), but I tried to follow up your 
comment.

1. I don't see any 'fw' in /dev.  Were you abbreviating for '/dev/firewire'?  
But I don't see /dev/firewire, either.
2. When installing the ATrpms hack (per the recommendations), I blacklisted 
firewire_ohci and firewire_core; so I wouldn't expect to see an entry for 
/dev/firewire.

Can you please point me to any other details about '...dvgrab will work nicely 
since Fedora 8 at least"?  From what I've read, that comes as a surprise.  
(I've given up on exporting to 1394 from Cinelerra.  Nevertheless, it would be 
nice to get rid of the ATrpms hack, just for configuration management 
integrity.)
