FWIW, (knocking on wood), I have always used Belkin cables, Adaptec host adapter card or onboard Intel MB FW adapter and have been doing FW capture for over 5 years without problem using multiple cameras (all Sony). I haven't even bothered to shut down between hotplugging. I do ground myself by touching the metal case prior to inserting the plug just for good luck (especially during the dry winter months). I doubt static electricity is your problem, but my common sense says their is no harm in being careful. So far so good.
