I have debian lenny installed on my computer and cinelerra from the debian
multimedia repos and to be quite frank it pretty rubbish with more than one HD
video. So I thought I
would try the heroine one and to be fair that faired pretty well. But as far
as I could tell neither were using my intel 4core cpus to the max. So the
question is, If i built
cin from source would I get better performance or is cin with more than one hd
video source crippled without going down the proxie route. On the other hand,
should I persevere
with the heroine version on ubuntu 8.04 (ie what heroine reccomend and provide
binaries for).
Dan,
Initially, I was also disappointed in Cinelerra's multicore performance on
my dual quad Dell. However, most of the basic editing functions in Cinelerra are not
CPU intensive. Try an oil painting effect on some HD video and you'll see
all procs skyrocket to 100%. So CPU use is dependent upon the function
you're using in Cinelerra. Video effects generally hammer the s* of
your CPUs.
I've built from source and used repositories (like Kwizart's Fedora 10
repository) and generally don't see much difference in performance. But then again, I haven't a rigorous, repeatable set of tests that I do to
measure performance.
I use the CV version of Cinelerra only, so I can't comment on the diffs
between the source versions.
As to Cinelerra being rubbish, may I refer you to Kurt's/Raffa's
observation:
