yup.  or work in a floating point (non-8-bit) colorspace.

One trip to another format using a high enough bitrate is not an awful
thing.  Given that I've got enough fast storage, I use yuv4mpeg as an
intermediate right now.

What you're doing right now actually sounds like a good compromise.
