Probably the most badly needed building block would be having clips
as an really independent entity. Cinelerra is completely track centric,
it has just sort of a "cut list" per tack. There is no entity you could
group or attach to something else.

But, taking the state of the source base into account, I'r rather refrain
from doing that as an initial attempt and first step. Rather, I'd propose
to have a look into that grouping of tacks. This sounds more tangible and
doable. It would mean to change the internal logic of the "overlayer"
in the engine, to be organised around a tree rather than a linear list
of tracks. IMHO this promises more short-term benefit with lesser effort.

Another question is regarding the state of affairs in the GUI. What's the
attitude towards libGuicast? Extending it? Modernising it? dropping it?
Recall: Guicast directly addresses Xlib. Few other Apps do that still,
todays (only the GUI framworks do. Do they, still? What's the role of
stuff like libCairo?). We all know about the discussions of reworking
or abandoning the old X architecture.

Having said that... libGuicast seems to lack the notion of "expanding"
or "collapsing" an entity or widget. This pretty much hinders any
serious evolution in the Cinelerra GUI. At least that's my judgement.

Cheers,
Hermann V.
