For your information, I found the solution to this problem: I had to manually set the IP address on both interfaces to be within the same subnet; "ip unnumbered" and "ip address negotiated" isn't a working setup...
However, what still puzzles me is why the ospf hello debugging was not reporting anything strange, the hellos just seemed to be lost.
