Digging further, the IOS config guide does mention rapid-PVST:

...hopefully it's just a misleading entry in the release notes. Frankly
that would be more credible that Cisco not doing Cisco-PVST!
The release notes and config guides are full of "TBD" so maybe they'll
correct things over the next few days.
